As a culture Canadians have been drinking deeply from a contaminated well when it comes to the issue of Gender and Sexuality. For the last 70 years we have been drinking from the American Psychological Association’s sexuality well. It’s a deep one, but it is filled with debris and not fit to drink. This well, once relatively pure stared getting polluted in 1949 when the University of Indiana published a scandalous, misrepresented and statistically skewed study on sexuality by Alfred Kinsey. The media picked it up, promoted it as truth and politians succumb.
Over the years that study has been used to qualify all kind of misrepresentation of the populace and promote sexual expression of all kinds by using Kinsey’s sexual ‘identity’ scale based on his erroneous belief that we are all born bi-sexual and then over time choose the direction of our sexual behaviour.
Just short of 20 years after Kinsey’s study was released the sexual revolution was given wings at Woodstock. Now 50 years later we have sexual practices, gender identity and the celebration of all things LGBTQ being celebrated from kindergarten onward.
When I think about the words of Philippians 4:8 I am reminded of these words were written for those who choose to follow Jesus and His Word. I also remember verses 4, 5, and 6, which remind us to
Rejoice in the LORD always and let our gentleness be evident to all.
The LORD is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present our requests to God.
What a relief to know we don’t, and in fact, can’t fix the mess of this world (it doesn’t mean we aren’t to be salt and light in it), but that ultimately it’s in God’s hands. Then listen to this
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
You see it’s not just about winning the battles for truth and justice in our world (although we need to put our hearts and minds to the task). At the end of the day it’s about surrender everything to God in prayer. Ultimately, it’s His battle, we are just his hands extended.
And then these words which I love:
Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.
Lets fix our minds on these things and teach our children to do the same. If we fix our minds on truth, righteousness and purity we will find our minds changing and our hearts and behaviour will reflect these things. We must be an example to a very lost and world, with minds devoid of right thinking, purity and truth as we ourselves once were.
